There is near-term universal availability of the United States Core Data for Interoperability (USCDI) via the SMART/HL7 FHIR access API. However, despite the availability of this data, today current measures of quality often require substantial one-off efforts for data acquisition, manipulation, and transmission. These efforts are expensive and are not consistent across providers and payers.
The SMART team convened this invite-only event in June 2022 with our advisory committee and some selected payer and provider partners with a clear focus: Taking advantage of what is universally available, can we spark an ecosystem of quality measurement, based on native, universally available FHIR resources?
There was broad agreement among attendees that this moment represents a tremendous opportunity to rethink quality measurement to lower the burden and cost on providers, and to produce more actionable real-time data.
Driving change will take effort and collaboration among all parties—regulators, payers, providers, vendors, and quality-focused organizations. There is optimism that specific actions within the next 6 to 12 months can initiate significant, sustainable change.
A detailed meeting summary report is available.
